Introducing the Bugatti Tourbillon: A New Chapter in Hypercar Excellence
The Bugatti Tourbillon is not just another variant of the Chiron. While it may bear a visual resemblance to its W-16-powered predecessor, it stands as a completely reimagined marvel. With a fresh monocoque, an entirely new suspension system, and a cutting-edge hybrid V-16 powertrain, the Tourbillon marks a significant leap forward. Prepare to meet Bugatti’s latest flagship: the 1,342-kilowatt (1,800-horsepower) Tourbillon.
I really like this video from years ago 🙂
Unleashing Unprecedented Power
The whispers were true—this hypercar is driven by an 8.3-liter V-16 engine, capable of revving up to 9,500 RPM and delivering a staggering 746 kilowatts (1,000 horsepower) without the aid of turbochargers. This engine, developed in collaboration with Cosworth, weighs just 252 kilograms despite its larger size compared to the W-16. Accompanying this naturally aspirated powerhouse is 900 Newton meters of torque. However, what truly sets the Tourbillon apart is its hybrid technology.
Advanced Hybrid Powertrain
The Tourbillon’s hybrid system is a marvel of engineering. The front e-axle houses two electric motors, while a third motor at the rear aids in propelling the back wheels. Together with a centrally mounted 25-kilowatt-hour battery pack, these components add an additional 596 kilowatts (800 horsepower), bringing the combined output to an impressive 1,342 kilowatts (1,800 horsepower). This setup enables the Tourbillon to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.0 seconds, given that the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide adequate grip.
Unmatched Performance Metrics
While a 0 to 100 km/h time is impressive, it only scratches the surface of the Tourbillon’s capabilities. The hypercar can reach 200 km/h in approximately 5.0 seconds, and 300 km/h in a mere 10 seconds. The top speed is 380 km/h under normal conditions, but with the Speed Key activated, the car can hit a breathtaking 444 km/h, with the rear wing tucked in for minimal drag.
Lightweight and Efficient
Despite the addition of a hybrid system, the Bugatti Tourbillon sheds some weight compared to the Chiron. The hypercar can travel up to 60 kilometers on electric power alone, making it practical for both city and highway driving. Though Bugatti has not yet disclosed specifics on charging times or speed in electric-only mode, the 800-volt system suggests rapid recharging capabilities. Under the guidance of Mate Rimac, a pioneer in electric vehicle technology, Bugatti is poised to deliver cutting-edge electric performance.
A Tribute to Timeless Craftsmanship
The name “Tourbillon” resonates with watch enthusiasts, referring to a mechanism in high-end timepieces that enhances accuracy. Bugatti’s Tourbillon lives up to this legacy with its blend of mechanical excellence and timeless design. The interior, accessed via electrically actuated dihedral doors, is a testament to analog beauty. Three large dials on the steering wheel provide crucial information such as speed, engine RPM, fuel levels, and temperature. Notably, there are no digital screens in sight, preserving the vehicle’s classic aesthetic.
Crafted by Swiss watchmakers, the gauges are fixed to the steering column to ensure they remain stationary as you turn the wheel. The center console features an array of aluminum switches, rotary dials, and a crystal lever to start the V-16 engine. Hidden within is a retractable digital screen that offers modern conveniences like Apple CarPlay, maintaining the balance between timelessness and modernity.
Iconic Bugatti Design
The Tourbillon’s design unmistakably screams Bugatti, with nods to the Chiron while introducing new elements. A unique diffuser starts just behind the passenger cabin, complemented by vents under the headlights that channel air to the large side intakes. The signature horseshoe grille directs air to the radiators and enhances downforce. An active rear wing acts as an airbrake when deployed. The car rides on an all-new multi-link suspension system that is 45% lighter than the Chiron’s, further enhancing its performance and handling.
A Legacy of Innovation
“The development of the Bugatti Tourbillon was guided at every step by the 115 years of Bugatti history and the words of Ettore Bugatti himself,” said Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac. “His mantras, ‘If comparable it is no longer Bugatti’ and ‘Nothing is too beautiful,’ were a guiding path for me personally, as well as the design and engineering teams, looking to create the next exciting era in the Bugatti hyper sports car story.”
While the Tourbillon is unveiled today, it won’t enter production until 2026, with just 250 units planned. Now in its testing phase, the hypercar will have a starting price of €3.6 million (approximately $3.9 million).
My only thought on this car is that I expected the design to be slightly different from the Chiron. Otherwise, this car is great!
I changed my theme, so I have to take the time to rearrange everything…
