Launching and history of the project
James was launched on Christmas Day 2021 in France to be precise in Kourou :D, and yes I was there… I was not with my family this time…
JWST is a space telescope serving as an observatory operating mainly in the infrared, developed by NASA with the participation of the European Space Agency (ESA).
The JWST is designed to continue the work of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The telescope carries four instruments:
- The NIRCam camera operating in the near infrared.
- The MIRI spectro-imager in the medium infrared.
- The NIRSpec spectrograph in the near infrared.
- The NIRISS spectro-imager, also in the near infrared.
These instruments will be used to deepen our knowledge in the main fields of astronomy : Period of reionization and formation of the first stars and galaxies after the Big Bang, formation and evolution of planetary processions and composition of the atmosphere of exoplanets.
Work on the JWST began in 1989, its manufacturing cost, which was estimated at 3 billion US dollars at the end of the general design phase in 2005, finally reached around 10 billion US dollars.
Webb unfolding sequence
After the launch, we have to wait months for the unfolding sequence, and also for the telescope to reach “Lagrange point” (L2) that’s really complicated… You just have to know, that Nasa sent a 10 billion $ telescope 1.5 million kilometers away from earth.
Webb’s first images calibration
Then we have to wait for the the calibration of the telescope.
NASA’s webb reaches alignment milestone, optics working successfully
Then the first images from Webb telescope
